Cattle Camp at Bommer Canyon Preserve Reopens to the Public

The City of Irvine invites the community to the reopening of the Cattle Camp at Bommer Canyon Preserve, Saturday, July 15, 9–11 a.m.for a dedication of the rehabilitated preserve and recreation area.

Since its incorporation in 1971, the City has been determined to balance development and the natural environment. In that effort, each phase of commercial and residential development is accompanied by the preservation and enhancement of natural open spaces, creating a network of parks, trails, and wildlands that residents and visitors may enjoy for generations to come. To further the City’s commitment, this 15-acre space will be officially renamed Bommer Canyon Preserve, formerly Bommer Canyon Community Park.

The original site was built in 1967 and honors the history of Irvine Ranch, including the Cattle Camp. Due to its age and outdoor exposure, the site became in need of repairs. After gathering extensive community feedback, the City launched the Bommer Canyon Community Park Rehabilitation Project in 2018, with a focus on restoring the Cattle Camp area. Construction on the site officially began in 2020.

Covered by a lush sycamore canopy, the newly restored Bommer Canyon Preserve maintains a modern yet rustic design and includes a major restoration of the Cattle Camp, featuring:

  • A 15-acre event space stage and backstage room.
  • Newly renovated Chuck Wagon kitchen with modern amenities.
  • An updated restroom building with flushable toilets.
  • New picnic tables and ADA accessible pathways.

Join the City as the Cattle Camp at Bommer Canyon Preserve officially reopens to the public as a hiking destination, picnic area, and picturesque event rental facility. The event includes a formal dedication, a hike with Mayor Farrah N. Khan, and informational booths from environmental organizations.

The Cattle Camp at Bommer Canyon Preserve is located at 11 Bommer Canyon Road. For more information about the opening event, visit cityofirvine.org/BommerCanyonPreserve.
